Historians date vineyards planted here by the Phoenicians in 500 B.C. Centuries later, the Romans shipped wine from Bandol to their vast empire. The Tempier domain dates to 1834, but overcoming phylloxera, war and the 1929 crash delayed the current rebuild and replanting to 1940, The first wine bottled in 1943 was a Rose! Producer Lucien Peyraud became the spiritual father of Bandol wine, promoting the Mourvèdre grape’s dominance to become a reality in the minds of all the Bandol winegrowers.
